Severe weather continues to disrupt train services to Latvia and Lithuania

On Sunday, 23 August, severe weather conditions in Lithuania and Latvia continue to disrupt passenger train services between the Baltic states. To maintain connections, today’s timetable has been temporarily adjusted.

“Latvia’s largest storm in decades temporarily closed the railway between Riga and Valga this morning, while train services in Lithuania were also disrupted due to difficult weather conditions,” said Kristo Mäe, Head of Communications at Elron. “As a result, the Vilnius–Riga–Tallinn train fell significantly behind schedule, and due to track conditions, its journey from Riga to Valga was cancelled. Elron’s morning direct Riga–Tartu–Tallinn train was also significantly delayed due to the weather.”

As the storm subsided, Latvia’s passenger train operator Vivi added a temporary train between Riga and Valga so that passengers travelling on the Vilnius–Riga–Tallinn service could reach their intended destinations.

Today, the Tallinn–Riga–Vilnius journey is being operated to Riga by an Elron train instead of the usual transfer at Valga. From Riga onwards, the journey continues on a train operated by Lithuanian passenger rail operator LTG Link. “However, due to the train change, passengers travelling on the evening Tallinn–Tartu–Riga direct service will have to transfer to a Vivi train at Valga,” Mäe added.

In Estonia, departures of trains arriving from and departing towards Latvia and Lithuania are operating according to the timetable. “We also hope to return to the normal timetable from Latvia and Lithuania by tomorrow morning. We apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused by today’s weather conditions,” Mäe said.

Elron will refund the cost of a journey if a train is delayed by 30 minutes or more. To request a refund, passengers must complete the refund form on Elron’s website: https://elron.pilet.ee/et/tagastus

IMPORTANT:

• The replacement Vilnius–Riga–Tallinn train departed Riga for Estonia at 14:10 and is 2 hours 25 minutes behind schedule (the scheduled departure from Riga was 11:45). At Valga, passengers will transfer to the scheduled replacement bus (service 119).
• The Tallinn–Riga–Vilnius train departed Valga according to schedule. The journey is exceptionally operated by an Elron Stadler FLIRT train as far as Riga, followed by a train operated by Lithuanian passenger rail operator LTG Link.
• The Tallinn–Tartu–Riga direct train is running according to schedule, but passengers will exceptionally have to transfer to a Vivi train at Valga.
• From Monday, 24 August, the normal timetable will apply on international routes.
